Paying out of pocket for therapy increases your privacy. Insurance companies require information from your records to authorize therapy sessions. If you do not want insurance companies to have access to your records, you cannot use insurance for your sessions.
Insurance companies require a mental health diagnosis, and they only cover certain diagnoses. Having a diagnosis covered by insurance may not fit your situation if you are looking for self-improvement rather than management of symptoms, couples therapy where neither member has a diagnosis, or you do not want a diagnosis to be included in your medical record.
A standard therapy hour session is 50 minutes in length, but insurance companies require certain timeframes for certain billing codes. Insurance may try to limit authorization for the standard therapy hour and decrease your session times. Occasionally, longer sessions may be helpful for your progress, but insurance companies generally do not pay for extended sessions.
You have more control over your treatment when insurance is not dictating the amount of sessions you can have or how often. Insurance companies can limit the total number of sessions you can have over the course of treatment and/or limit the number of sessions you can have in a week.
Insurance companies have strict requirements for treatment plans that may not be best in your case, they can limit the number of sessions, and they can limit the frequency and focus of sessions. You and your therapist decide and control your treatment options when insurance is not involved.
Use the contact page to reach out and get started. We will coordinate a free 15-minute phone call to discuss your needs and goals for therapy and determine if we're a good fit. From there, we'll coordinate scheduling for your sessions.
Therapy with Heather Kilgore LMFT can benefit anyone who is struggling with a mental health challenge or looking to improve their overall emotional well-being. I work with adult clients with various backgrounds.
In your first therapy session, we will discuss your reasons for seeking therapy and your goals for treatment. We will also talk about your medical history and any current symptoms you may be experiencing.
Therapy sessions are generally 50 minutes in length but can be adjusted based on individual needs and insurance company requirements, if using insurance.
The frequency of therapy sessions will depend on your individual needs, goals, and insurance requirements when applicable. Many clients attend therapy once a week, while others may attend more or less frequently. We will work together to develop a personalized treatment plan.
You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost, including details on couples therapy pricing and individual therapy pricing.
Under the law, health care providers are required to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, which encompasses psychotherapy services such as couples therapy and individual therapy, as well as telehealth sessions.
You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services.
Feel free to ask your health care provider, or any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before scheduling a service.
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. It’s important to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate for reference.
For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
