Therapy for PTSD and Trauma in California and Ohio

Understanding Trauma and PTSD in Veterans and Military

Serving in the military often involves experiences that are intense, high-stress, and sometimes life-threatening. While many service members return home with pride and resilience, others carry emotional and psychological injuries that can linger long after the mission ends.

What Is Trauma?

Trauma is the emotional response to a distressing event that overwhelms a person’s ability to cope. For veterans and active-duty military, trauma can stem from combat exposure, witnessing death or injury, surviving attacks, or enduring long periods of high alert and separation from loved ones.

Trauma doesn’t always come from a single event and it can build over time. It doesn’t always show up immediately. Sometimes, it surfaces months or even years later.

What Is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing traumatic events. It’s not a sign of weakness, it's a human response to overwhelming stress.

Veterans with PTSD may experience:

  • Flashbacks and nightmares that replay traumatic events
  • Avoidance of reminders like sounds, places, or conversations
  • Hypervigilance or feeling constantly on edge
  • Emotional numbness or difficulty connecting with others
  • Irritability, anger, or guilt, especially survivor’s guilt

These symptoms can affect relationships, work, and overall well-being.

You Are Not Alone

PTSD is common among veterans, and many have found healing through support and treatment. Whether you served in combat or in support roles, your experiences matter and so does your mental health.

Healing Is Possible

Recovery doesn’t mean forgetting, it means learning to live with what happened in a way that allows you to move forward.
